Improve your health, strength, and mobility -

functional magnetic stimulation

Healthcare is always evolving as we develop new, evidence-based treatments for difficult conditions.

Functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) is an innovative, non-invasive procedure that can ease pain and  improve musculoskeletal function. FMS is used in a wide variety of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions – acute and chronic lower back pain, urinary incontinence, joint pain and more.

The clinical team at Core Strong Rehab in Newport QLD will discuss how FMS can improve your health, strength, and mobility.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Core Strong Rehab OFFERING FMS

FMS is a medical evidence-based treatment for a growing number of painful, debilitating health conditions.

At Core Strong Rehab, your health will be managed by a registered multidisciplinary healthcare professional, Dr Susan Thomas. Dr Susan Thomas is a Doctor of Chiropractic, Registered Midwife, and Registered Nurse with over 30 years of clinical experience. She brings a rare blend of skills – traditional methods alongside the latest scientific and technological advances such as FMS.

Dr Thomas has helped thousands of patients improve their health and wellbeing. Now, in bringing functional magnetic stimulation to the Peninsula, she hopes to help even more – including you!

Introducing

functional magnetic stimulation (FMS)

Functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) is an innovative, non-invasive procedure that has been demonstrated through clinical medical trials to ease pain and improve musculoskeletal function.

It’s used in a wide variety of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. It is a non-invasive method of delivering a rapidly pulsed, high-intensity magnetic field to the chosen area of treatment.

A special magnetic field is generated by a pulse of current inside the EM (electro magnetic) mechanism, inducing a current that triggers the motor nerve system of the body, stimulating the targeted muscles to contract and helping to boost circulation and nutrition.

Interest in the research and clinical applications has increased over the last three decades as it is considered a novel, painless, and easy treatment approach for many neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.

How does FMS work?

FMS - a pulsed magnetic field

FMS creates a pulsed magnetic field (up to 3 tesla) that makes the targeted muscles contract at a much higher rate than exercise alone can achieve.

Typically, we use 3 tesla (a unit of measurement that calculates the strength of a magnetic field).

Who Benefits

Functional magnetic stimulation (FMS)

The evidence demonstrates that FMS can improve quality of life.

FMS is used to strengthen muscles in various areas, including the glutes, abdominals, quadriceps, hamstrings, triceps, biceps, rotator cuff, and pelvic floor.

It works by using a pulsed magnetic field to contract the muscles through its effect on the motor nerves at the target site. Scientific studies have proven that FMS treatments can increase muscle mass in the treated area.

Building core strength is a highly desired outcome in physical therapy. FMS is an innovative platform that can induce contractions in all muscle groups related to core strength, including the pelvic floor, rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, internal and external obliques, quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, and gluteus medius and maximus.

FMS technology stimulates muscles, causing supramaximal contractions that build muscle cells faster than traditional strength training. These intense contractions lead to a rapid metabolic reaction in fat cells, which strengthens and rebuilds muscle while reducing fat. Supramaximal contractions release free fatty acids, breaking down localized fat deposits and improving muscle tone and strength. In a single session,

FMS can induce more than 50,000 muscle contractions, making it a powerful and effective way to sculpt and tone the body.

Functional Magnetic Stimulation is a breakthrough treatment for incontinence and confidence. This unique technology revolutionises sexual health and wellness by providing those suffering from incontinence with a completely non-invasive and effective option for
management of symptoms.

FMS is an effective, conservative, non-invasive and safe method in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

FMS also treats urinary incontinence and chronic pain in the pelvic region.

Particularly effective in cases of upper and lower peripheral nerve damage and degeneration, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation post stroke.

A valuable rehabilitation tool for acute/chronic lower back pain, sciatica, disc pathology and injury, facet joint degeneration, and spinal musculature sprain/strain.

Ideal for addressing degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cervical pain, and muscle pain.

Many people suffer from foot pain associated with musculoskeletal injury.

FMS can treat leg and foot conditions and their symptoms.  The following are some examples of what FMS applied to the feet can treat:
  • Acute foot pain
  • Chronic foot pain
  • Foot Neuralgia
  • Foot Nerve Damage
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Acute and Chronic Plantar fasciitis
  • Cacaneal Spur
  • Hallux Valgus Inflammation.

Applicable for many conditions such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, plantar fasciitis, and rehabilitation after bone fracture.

Treatment For Urinary Incontinence

“…magnetic stimulation therapy for treating urinary incontinence has a positive effect. The impact of urine leakage on everyday life was reduced in all urinary incontinence types.”

“[Following functional magnetic stimulation] 58% of patients suffering from urge incontinence were completely dry…80% of patients suffering from stress incontinence were completely dry after the therapy…69% of patients suffering from mixed urinary incontinence were dry…The best results are achieved with patients with urine incontinence after childbirth – 95% of women were completely dry after even less than 16 therapies.”University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Treatment For Sciatica

“…applying FMS therapy along with other standard physical therapy methods rapidly increased effectiveness of the treatment of sciatica syndrome.”

What people are asking

FAQS about FMS

From a patient’s perspective, FMS is a straightforward treatment. You simply come into the clinic and sit in a specially designed chair.

Depending on your treatment needs, the chair may stimulate your pelvic area or your lower back or we may apply a special device to your abdomen. If you’re having treatment for your feet, you’ll place your feet on a special footpad.

Each treatment session takes about 30 minutes. You may feel pulses and muscle contractions but these should be painless sensations.

No. FMS treatment is contraindicated for patients who:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have
    • Cancer
    • A metal implant or IUD
    • A cardiac condition or cardiac pacemaker
    • A medication pump
    • Endometriosis
    • Open wounds near the treatment site
  • Are under 18.

No. FMS and Electro Therapy are different.

FMS does not stimulate pain nerves on the skin surface and is therefore more pleasant than classical electrical stimulation.
